The layover nights.
Sitting alone outside of the airport main block. Passengers of the occasional bus give a unanimous glare. Bus full of curiosity, or interest. More probably it was just a casual glance, since there was nothing better to look at.
Chain smoking seems a natural activity.
On this occasion, it's the KLIA. Headphones sent me 伍佰, Travis, The Servant, Nirvana, La Ocho, and more.
A long lost peace sought.
There's no one to impress. There is no social obligation to fulfill. There is no good tv show to anticipate. No night out could beat this. Not even when there is someone next to you numbing your arm all night long.
You start thinking of Hannah Arendt's words on the difference between solitude and loneliness. Must it be one or the other?
On this particular occasion, the moment ended with a banker from Dakar asking for a light. He even shared some of his fruity white wine, and a story of how he missed his flight from Thailand due to a series of inexplicable events.
There was one other night in Amsterdam. For no reason I got an extra stamp in my passport. It was cold, and met a diehard Ajax fan flying in from somewhere.
Yet another one in Miami, reading the kiterunner outside. Some Latinos asked me directions in Spanish though I spoke none at the time. Then an air hostess who asked for a light said how much she loved the book.
There are sadder ones too. Delhi where I had just parted a someone special, the L word was more overwhelming. A Dubai man asked why are you doing this to yourself. 10 hour layover he meant. I didn't know either.
They lead nowhere. But for some reason, KL has made me realize, these nights ans conversations are more grounded than many things in daily life.
:)
